Manteca topples EU to end 3-match skid

Manteca dispatched visiting rival East Union 25-17, 25-22, 25-8 on Thursday, picking up a much-needed Valley Oak League win after dropping its previous three in succession.

Michaela Singh led Manteca (2-3 VOL, 9-7 overall) with 15 kills and six aces. Courtney Washburn had 10 kills and two blocks. Nicole Ayala registered nine digs and two aces, while Jessica Almeida contributed 22 assists.

Mariela Navarro turned in five kills and three blocks for the Lancers (0-5, 8-9). Marcella Carranza dished out eight assists, while Meritiana Luani added six digs and three aces.

Both teams will compete in the VOL midseason tournament Saturday at Central Catholic.  

 

Sierra 3, Kimball 0

The VOL-leading Timberwolves (5-0, 14-1 overall) conquered Kimball (2-3, 7-6) of Tracy, 26-24, 25-14, 25-11.

Zoe Kossart crushed 18 kills while contributing nine digs on defense. Rebecca Thomson netted 20 assists, 13 digs, four aces and four kills.

 

El Capitan 3, Ripon 1

The Gauchos (16-2) visited from Merced for a non-league match, winning 10-25, 25-17, 25-22, 25-10.

Danika Matuska led the attack for host Ripon (13-8) with seven kills. Makenzie Loechler added five kills and six blocks. Adriana Dorn contributed six kills, four blocks and eight assists.

Kaya Whitaker handed out 18 assists, and Reagan Wilkerson had eight digs.

 

Lathrop 3, Pacheco 1

Alaba Olaleye netted 16 kills and 22 digs, while Azul Maldonado chipped in 14 and 16 in the Spartans’ 25-17, 29-31, 25-23, 25-19 Western Athletic Conference win.

Camila De La Garza distributed 44 assists for Lathrop (8-1, 12-4), Alejandra Vazquez contributed 12 and Celeste Narvaez came up with 32 digs.

 

Ripon Christian 3, Gustine 0

The Southern Athletic League-leading Knights (8-0, 17-4) downed Gustine on the road, 25-11, 25-21, 25-5.

Sydney Hoffman paced them with 12 kills and two blocks. Setters Eva Benedict and Megan Weststeyn each had 18 assists.

Avery McMurray contributed seven kills, and Ava Van Groningen fired five service aces. Leah Van Wyngarden and Van Groningen led the defense with four digs apiece.

 

Junior varsity

Manteca 2, East Union 0

The Buffaloes were 25-15, 25-20 victors.

Jayana Dias collected eight assists and three aces. Sophia Nussbaumer blasted four kills, and Isabella Medina chipped in with three kills.

Jaelynn Ballou finished with four kills and three aces for EU. Gisele Velazquez collected six digs, and Izabella Avalos had two kills and three digs.

 

Kimball 2, Sierra 1

Sierra came up short, 21-25, 25-16, 13-15.

Cianna Leonardo paced the Timberwolves with 10 assists and two aces. Amaya Maciel netted seven kills and two aces. Katelyn Burkett chipped in three aces and five digs. Ellie Denny led the defense with 10 digs.

 

Ripon 2, El Capitan 0

The Indians improved to 15-0 with the 25-18, 25-15 non-league victory.

Shayla McKeon spearheaded the attack with eight kills, and Amelia Lara chipped in six to go with four digs. Katelyn Bogetti accumulated 20 assists, six aces and two blocks.

 

Lathrop 2, Pacheco 0

The Spartans held on for the 25-24, 25-22 victory.

Annabelle Obasuyi anchored the front row with four kills and six solo blocks. Julia Roaquin chimed in with 30 assists, four kills and four digs. Justine Mabutas accumulated 25 digs. Faith Moya paced the attack with six kills, and Valerie Renteria scored four kills to go with 10 digs.

 

Freshman

Manteca 2, East Union 0

Sienna Lowery served eight aces to go with her six assists, helping Manteca win, 25-11, 25-14.

Jocelyn Baptist chimed in with four kills, Lily Perez had four digs and Talia Shelbourne added three kills and two aces.

Gwen Baker and Caliyah Lopez anchored East Union with their passing.

 

Kimball 2, Sierra 0

Sierra could not get over the hump in a 17-25, 23-25 setback.

Maitland Kohoutek clubbed five kills, and Danica Cesante dished out six assists.

 

El Capitan 2, Ripon 1

The visiting Gauchos fended off Ripon, 25-23, 15-25, 15-13.

Olivia Taylor paced the Indians with seven kills, Ashley Campos collected six digs and Addison Naranjo had five digs and four aces.

 

Lathrop 2, Pacheco 0

Lathrop took care of business, 25-18, 25-14.

Shakara Porter produced five kills and five blocks. Dayanara Machuca also had five blocks to go with three kills. Alyana Vere tallied six digs and four aces. Tatianna Lopez had six assists, and Angelic Bermudez picked up 14 digs.
