Manteca wins big to open Sierra tourney

Gabby Escobedo poured in 10 of her game-high 17 points to lead Manteca High’s girls basketball team to a 55-23 victory over Ripon Christian Friday in the first round of the 14th Annual Lady Timberwolves Rotary Classic.

Emily Owsley and Mariah Navarro each chipped in eight points for the Buffaloes (6-1).

Manteca will take on either tournament host Sierra or Tracy at 1:30 p.m. today.

The Timberwolves (9-2) dropped their tournament opener to the Bay Area powerhouse despite a 19-point, 10-rebound effort from Lia Unterholzner.

Sierra battled tough at the start until starter Jessica Lopez left the game after breaking an arm.

Kelly Paredes contributed seven points and a pair of steals, while Joanna Ortiz added six points and three rebounds.
Sierra faces crosstown rival Manteca, which was edged out 41-40 Friday by Tracy, today at 10:30 a.m.
