ESCALON — Ripon Christian’s girls basketball team hit the hardwood running Wednesday and routed Johansen 50-30 in the first round of the Pete Arellano Memorial Tournament.

The Knights (1-0) take on Central Catholic in the semifinals tonight starting at 6:30. They opened up with a 14-7 first-quarter lead and increased it to double digits for the rest of the game.

“We’re real young with a couple of sophomores starting for us, so they’re still learning to play with each other,” Ripon Christian coach Ed Mulder said. “When we moved the ball around we did pretty well.”

Renae Heida is one of those sophomores, and she poured in 12 points, eight rebounds, four steals and four assists in her varsity debut. Senior Molly Hoeksema led Ripon Christian with 17 points and eight rebounds.
