Alex Gonzales set a personal record with a 7-over-par 38 Thursday at Jack Tone Golf Course, where she helped host Ripon down Valley Foothill League newcomer Sonora, 166-181.

Sonora, formerly of the Valley Oak League, had the low medalist in Megan Popovich, who bested Gonzales by two strokes. Ripon overcame that with Gonzales’ sterling effort and three 42s from Erin Wever, Claire Wever and Laura Williams.

Also scoring for Sonora were Olivia Partone (43), Emma Peller (51) and Kailie Fredrickson (51).

Ripon next heads to Calaveras on Tuesday.

Kimball 6,
Weston Ranch 3

Weston Ranch (1-1) had an encouraging outing despite the loss.

Coming off a 9-0 shutout at the hands of Oakdale, the Cougars made Kimball sweat this one out by forcing four three-set matches. Weston Ranch was able to win one of those, as No. 5 singles player Teresa Haley toppled Rachael Hall, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3.

The other two points were scored by doubles teams. The top tandem of Mary and April Vang raced past Jagroop Kaur and Tiffany Dequit, 6-0, 6-1. Weston Ranch’s No. 2 team of Jaz Kaur and Alyssa Ryan won its match, 6-0, 6-2.

“We asked the girls to step up and compete and they did,” Weston Ranch coach Julia Bylow said. “We were very proud of their efforts today.”
