Ariana Fuentes and Lyllianna Avila combined for a mercy-shortened three-hitter, as Lathrop’s softball team blew out visiting Franklin for a 17-0 win on Tuesday.

Fuentes struck out nine and walked one over three innings, giving up one hit. Avila fanned two in the final two innings and was 2-for-4 offensively with an RBI.

Alina Fuentes (three walks) and Isa Paniagua (walk, hit by pitch) both went 1-for-1. It was a good bounce-back effort for the Spartans (1-1) after their season-opening defeat to Manteca last week.

“Overall, we came out swinging at better pitches and playing better defense than in our game against Manteca on Friday,” Lathrop coach Stephanie Maestretti said. “It was nice to get a win under our belts. We made the defensive plays we needed to when the time came and got some key hits, as well. Looking forward to using this momentum moving into Thursday’s game against Sierra.

The Buffaloes (2-0) blasted their way out of an early rut in their home opener, erupting for six runs in the fifth inning and adding one more in the sixth to end it early.

“We came out a little flat to start the game, but credit to the girls for keeping after it and executing our game plan,” Manteca coach Josh Farris said.

Nayellys Torres pitched all six innings for the Buffs, scattering four hits and a walk while striking out eight. Grace Rosas went 2-for-3 and powered the attack with a double, a triple and five RBIs. Baylee Willenbrink (two steals, RBI) finished 2-for-3, Jessica Almeida (run, RBI) was 2-for-4 and Peyton Faias plated three runs.

“The coaching staff is especially proud of the bottom of our lineup being the catalyst for our big innings today, Farris said. “They have been working hard and it paid off.”
