Lathrop opened the Western Athletic Conference girls tennis season in dominant fashion Wednesday, blanking Ceres 9-0 at Manteca Regional Tennis Center.

Preserving the shutout was Riana Dela Cruz at No. 6 singles. She held off Camila Orellana, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. The Spartans only lost 13 games in the rest

Madilynn Romero defeated Gureleen Kuar 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 1 singles match. No. 2 Justice Pacheco Seward and No. 5 Eliza Alday dispatched their opponents 6-0, 6-0, as did the No. 1 doubles team of Ruby Chavez and Jasmin Smith.

Suhani Banwait defeated Jelanie Joy Esguerra 6-4, 6-2 in the competitive No. 3 duel. No. 4 Lupe Zepeda cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 victory.

At No. 2 doubles, Janelle Lat and Tai Lowery prevailed, 6-0, 6-2. The third tandem of Rachelle Boateng and Keziah Boateng won, 6-1, 6-0.


VOLLEYBALL

Ripon Christian 3, Manteca 1

Coming off a well-contested four-set loss to reigning Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV champion Escalon, Ripon Christian (3-2) bounced back one night later with a 25-7, 20-25, 25-18, 25-11 triumph at Manteca (4-3).

Jordan Vander Veen blasted 21 kills and was backed by Avery McMurray’s 10. Ava Van Groningen contributed 11 digs and two aces. Leah Van Wyngarden had 10 digs, while Megan Weststeyn amassed 41 assists and two aces.

Courtney Washburn recorded 10 kills, six blocks and nine service points for the Buffaloes. Emily Inderbitzin served 14 points, two of which went for aces, and had five digs. Jessica Almeida chipped in 11 assists and four digs. Jill Santos tallied seven digs.

 

East Union 3, Modesto 2

In Modesto, the Lancers (6-2) held on to win their fourth straight match, 25-16, 25-19, 18-25, 22-25, 15-8.

Giselle Hamilton helped create separation in the final set when she served seven straight points for a 10-3 East Union lead.

Katelyn Trevino led the attack with nine kills, and Valerie Ochoa pounded seven. Grace Silva contributed four kills and three blocks. Isabel Israel paced the defense with 13 digs. Setter Marcella Carrenza handed out 11 assists, while Makayla Viri netted seven assists and four aces. Meritiana Luani had three kills, four aces and five digs.

 

JV volleyball

Ripon Christian 2, Manteca 0

Jayana Dias spearheaded the Manteca attack with 11 assists. Sophia Nussbaumer and Peyton McDonald (three aces, two digs) crushed five kills apiece. Eras Tuddao led the defense with four digs.

 

East Union 2, Modesto 0

Laura Montanez served five aces, while Giselle Velazquez added three in the Lancers’ 25-7, 25-22 win. Jaelynn Ballou hit two kills.

 

Frosh volleyball

Manteca 2, Ripon Christian 1

The host Buffaloes came away with the 20-25, 25-14, 15-6 win.

Leading the charge was Saniyah Anthony with five digs, two kills and two aces. Sienna Lowery contributed six assists and three aces. Talia Shelbourne rapped four kills, and Jocelyn Baptist had three.

 

Frosh football

Stagg 14, Sierra 7

Stagg connected on an 85-yard pass play in the fourth quarter last Thursday to complete the come-from-behind win last Thursday.

Xavier Torres returned an interception 60 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter to put the Timberwolves ahead 6-0. Ben Davenport blocked a fumble and Hezekiah Griffin, Ryan Reyes, and Lorenzo Jones made four tackles apiece for Sierra. A.J. Chapman and Julian Ruiz added three stops each.

Ruiz, Chapman, Torres, Reyes and Jayden Pimentel contributed to the Timberwolves offense.
