ANGELS CAMP – There was a lot to be determined in Tuesday’s Valley Oak League Championships at Greenhorn Creek, and East Union’s Kyle Harman proved to be the key factor, capturing the VOL’s Most Valuable Player award and leading the Lancers to a co-championship with Oakdale High with a 4 over par round of 76.
Harman edged out Oakdale freshman Ian Stogdell by a single stroke to catapult past Oakdale’s Austin Whitworth and Sierra’s Miguel Dominguez in the league’s individual points race.
“Kyle wanted this very bad,” East Union head coach Dennis Wells said. “Not only did he want our team to win VOL’s, but he also wanted to finish up and beat Austin.
“To see him beat Austin, shooting a 76 on a tough course; I was really happy for the young man.”
Harman’s round led East Union to arguably its best team round of the season. Getting scores in the 70s from three players. Tanner Bragg followed Harmon with a 78, while Jordan Duval shot a 79. Freshman Will Brink turned in an 86, and Guillermo Barajas shot an 88. East Union’s team round of 407, was nearly 20 strokes better than the second-place Mustangs. Sierra High finished with a 429, falling two points behind Oakdale and forfeiting the Lancers shot at an outright league championship.
“Shooting 407 and having three guys shoot in the 70s, I couldn’t be more happier with the way these guys played today,” Wells said. “Kyle shooting what he shot and winning player of the year made it even better for our team.
“It just seemed like everything came together for us out there today.”
Sierra did its best to play spoiler, advancing to the Sac-Joaquin Section with its team round of 429, getting its best round from Paul Michaleto’s 81. Ryan Leasure turned in an 83, Drew Allen an 84, and Miguel Dominguez finished 18 holes in 86 strokes. Both Kasey Milam and Chase Hunter shot 94 and 99, respectively.
The Timberwolves will join East Union, Oakdale and Sonora in continuing their season at Timber Creek Golf Course in Roseville, looking to put together a round good enough to advance to the Sac-Joaquin Section Masters Tournament at The Reserve in Stockton May 17.
“We’re pleased, but we didn’t perform as well as we would have liked to,” Sierra head coach Jeff Williams said. “We talked about it at the end. Those things happen and we’ve got all of next week to get ready for the divisional.
“Only one team will go on, so we’re going to work hard this week on our performance.”
Four other area standouts have tickets to the divisionals punched after finishing as one of the league’s top six players not on one of the advancing four teams. Manteca High’s Nick Gonzalez, Kenny Summers and Casey Benson all advanced to the next round, while Weston Ranch’s Joel Keough and Ryan Ortiz both extended their seasons another week as well.
Gonzalez (91), Summers (86) and Benson (107) led Manteca’s team-round of 500, while Keough (84) and Ryan Ortiz (106) led Weston Ranch’s round of 509.
Sierra’s third place tournament finish, coupled with its 11-5 VOL mark, left the Timberwolves in a third place tie with the Sonora Wildcats, enabling the team to advance to the divisionals with the tie.
The VOL’s first team is obviously led by MVP Harman, followed by Whitworth, Dominguez of Sierra, Stogdell, Mclaughlin, Michaleto, Brink of East Union, Sierra’s Allen, Duval of East Union and Sonora’s Smith.
