Defending titlist Manteca wins VOL opener over Sierra

In a battle between two 2017 Sac-Joaquin Section postseason finalists, Manteca toppled visiting rival Sierra 7-2 to begin its defense of the Valley Oak League title on Tuesday.
Last season, the Buffaloes reached the SJS Division III title match for a second straight year, while Sierra advanced to the Division IV finale.
Manteca (1-0, 4-0 overall) has again established itself as the pacesetter in the VOL, winning five of the six singles matches in straight sets. Reigning VOL singles champion Kaitlyn Rausa prevented the singles sweep, defeating Julia Tang, 6-4, 6-1.
Sahiba Kaur held off Sierra’s Nadia Petrovic 6-0, 6-4 at No. 2 singles, while No. 3 Makenna Condit cruised past Melanie Nguyen, 6-1, 6-0. Navina Mann (6-2, 6-1), Kerren Zou (6-4, 6-3) and Yanki Ma (6-3, 6-2) added singles points for the Buffaloes.
Noeli Mercado and Melissa Poncini won at No. 1 doubles 6-3, 6-0. CIsabella Huerta and Danielle Diaz outlasted Seerit Gill and Gedona Kelete, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. The Timberwolves’ No. 3 tandem of Abigale Levya and Biancia Dunga edged out Charleen Magdayalog and Kalissa Martin, 6-4, 6-4.

Oakdale 7, East Union 2
Isabel Moreno highlighted the Lancers’ league opener with a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Tayea Barry in the No. 1 singles matchup. No. 4 Sarah Gloeckler tallied East Union’s other point with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Shannon Yang.
Jenny Garcia narrowly dropped the No. 6 singles match 0-6, 6-4, 4-6 against Jessica Garcia.
