TURLOCK – Sierra High’s varsity baseball team got a shot at taking down Turlock High’s ace, but the Timberwolves came up short in a 9-4 loss to the Bulldogs Friday.
Vince Wheeland was the real deal, dominating Sierra’s bats for six innings. The Oklahoma State University bound senior cruised in his six innings of work, striking out 12 Timberwolves, surrendering three hits and walking one in his third win of the season.
“What our kids got to see today was a legitimate D-I guy, and he was good” Sierra head coach Jack Thomson said. “He was dominant the whole game, he threw three pitches for strikes and really did a great job.
“Hopefully it’s a great learning experience for our kids.”
The Timberwolves (2-2) have their primary focus on beginning the Valley Oak League schedule, forcing the squad to hold their top-tier pitchers for the opening league series beginning Tuesday.
“We had to throw our four and five and then got our No. 2 in for an inning,” Thomson said. “That happened to be the one inning that they didn’t score. Baseball sometimes doesn’t have things match up the way you would wish, but hopefully we are able to take something from it.
“They were a good team and they’ve played a competitive schedule.”
Jonathan Davis and Dylan DeBrower both tallied a pair of hits, with Davis going 2 for 3 with a double and DeBrower finishing 2 for 4 with a pair of singles.
Sierra will meet up with Stagg Monday to close out the non-league season before kicking off VOL play Tuesday Weston Ranch.
Weston Ranch (3-4) dropped their second contest on the season to McNair, falling 5-4 on March 1 to open the season.
The Cougars found themselves in the midst of a ballgame, trailing just 3-1 entering the bottom of the third. Things spiraled out of control from there, as the Eagles kicked things open with a five-run inning.
“We didn’t play very well defensively,” Cougars head coach Dave Smith said. “We had some chances to make plays and we just didn’t make them.
“We just left the door open for them to score runs.”
The Cougars were able to get a multi-hit performance from Brandon Matsumoto who went 2 for 3 with a triple and a run scored. Matsumoto plated the Cougars’ only run after being walked in with the bases loaded following the triple.
Akia Etu went 1 for 2 with a double.
Weston Ranch will open league play Tuesday when they host the Sierra Timberwolves.
