VOLLEYBALL: First VOL crown within reach for Sierra

Sierra is on its way to claiming the first Valley Oak League championship in program history.

Rebecca Thomson dished out a whopping 53 assists to go with 19 digs, as the Timberwolves escaped Central Catholic with a hard-earned 25-13, 22-25, 22-25, 25-23, 16-14 win over the defending co-champion.

They improved to 7-0 in league, 19-2 overall.

Zoe Kossart collected 21 kills and 10 digs. Libero Jenna Dalen amassed 18 digs, Ciara Castro had 15 digs and three aces, and Amelia Hernandez fired seven kills.


Oakdale 3, Manteca 2

Manteca (3-4 VOL, 11-9 overall) dropped a five-game heartbreaker at home, 24-26, 27-25, 25-19, 24-26, 14-16.

Michaela Singh led the Buffaloes with 13 kills and 11 digs. Carsyn Van Zant added eight kills and two blocks. Riley Slikker had seven kills and 10 digs.

Nicole Ayala paced the defense with 28 digs while serving 16 points. Setters Ava Negranza (three aces) and Jessica Almeida (four kills, 11 digs, three aces) added 16 and 14 assists, respectively.

Courtney Washburn added six kills and five blocks.


East Union 3, Kimball 1

The Lancers (0-7 VOL, 8-12 overall) could not get over the hump in their 13-25, 25-23, 19-25, 21-25 defeat.

Alma Rosas netted 13 digs and three kills. Marcella Carranza also had 13 digs and dished out seven assists. Mariela Navarro had four kills and seven blocks.


Ripon Christian 3, Orestimba 0

The Southern Athletic League crown is all but wrapped up for the Knights (10-0, 20-4) with four matches remaining.

They knocked off second-place Orestimba, 25-17, 27-25, 25-17. Jordan Vander Veen spearheaded Ripon Christian with with 19 kills and five aces. Megan Weststeyn distributed 28 assists, while Ava Van Groningen had 13 digs.

Ripon Christian also swept the two lower-level tilts.


Lathrop 3, Grace Davis 0

Alaba Olaleye netted 13 kills, 18 digs and two aces, in Lathrop’s convincing 25-14, 25-17, 25-12 win in Western Athletic Conference play.

Janessa Ward contributed six kills and 13 digs for the Spartans (9-2, 13-6 overall). Camila De La Garza (eight digs) and Alejandra Vazquez set 16 and 15 assists, respectively.


Junior varsity

Oakdale 2, Manteca 0

The Buffaloes came up short in a late comeback surge, 10-25, 25-27.

Peyton McDonald mashed six kills and three digs. Sophia Nussbaumer chipped in three kills and six digs. Freshman Riley Ward turned in 10 assist and three digs.


East Union 2, Kimball 1

The Lancers celebrated a 25-17, 24-26, 16-14 win

Isabella Rodriguez served nine points, had five digs and three aces. Laura Montanez collected nine digs. Jaelynn Ballou led the attack with three kills.


Lathrop 2, Grace Davis 0

Lathrop held on for the 27-25, 25-19 victory.

Julia Roaquin led the Spartans with three kills, 12 assists and six digs. Justine Mabutas anchored the back row with 18 digs. Annie Millan had three kills and five digs in the attack. Annabella Obasuyi added two kills and two solo blocks.



Manteca 2, Oakdale 0

Sienna Lowery tallied six assists, four aces and three kills, as the Buffaloes rolled to a 25-21, 25-16 triumph.

Saniyah Anthony contributed four kills, four digs and two assists. Alisha James handed out six assists. Lily Perez picked up nine digs.


Lathrop 2, Grace Davis 0

Alyana Vere erupted for 14 service aces, as Lathrop cruised, 25-12, 25-12.

Dayanara Machuca added two kills four solo blocks and three digs. Kriselle Matela posted eight assists and six digs. Angelic Bermudez turned in eight digs.
