2000: Sierra boys basketball overcomes 18-point deficit

Twenty years ago on February 14, 1990, the Manteca High Lady Buffs rolled to an easy 49-33 win over host Ceres High Tuesday night behind the 23-point effort of Cateena Gleaves. She finished with 11 of 12 shots from the free throw line. Maci Buck added 10 points to the winning total.

The East Union High golf team won its opening match of the season 221-223 over Tokay High at Elkhorn Country Club in Stockton yesterday. Eric Reyes led the Lancers by shooting a 42.

Manteca High woke up from their four-game losing streak to explode past visiting Ceres High 73-53 with an intense second-half effort Wednesday night. Rick Mullen  and Jeff Nussbaumer each canned 16 points to led the Buffaloes, while Jason Van De Pol and David Foehringer added 12 points apiece.

East Union High junior Armando Avina canned a 20-foot bank-shot three-pointer with five seconds remaining in the second overtime for a stunning 56-53 Lancer triumph over league-leading Sonora High Wednesday night at a delirious Dalben Center. Avina finished the contest with a team-high 21 points. Eric Simoni was second with 16 points, including a pair of important 3-pointers.

Jill Widmer hit a three-point basket, her only points of the game, with two seconds remaining in overtime to give East Union High a 37-34 victory over Ceres High Thursday night at Dalben Center. The win ended a seven-game losing streak for the Lady Lancers in the Valley Oak League. Angie Paradzinski led EU with a team-high 20 points, her third straight 20-point effort.

The East Union High and Manteca High soccer teams landed six players on the all-VOL squad, including Player of the Year Jeremy Perez, a sweeper at MHS. Other Buffaloes selected to the first team were juniors Ryan Gonzales and John Coldren.

East Union High’s Angelo Gama earned a sub-section wrestling championship in Angels Camp Saturday at the 126-pound weight class and will join five other local wrestlers who earned the right to advance to next weekend’s Section meet at Rancho Cordova. Gama’s teammate Juan Barrera earned a title with a tough 5-3 decision in his weight class.

10 years ago: February 18, 2000 - East Union High’s soccer team defeated intra-city rival Manteca High 1-0 on Thursday to clinch the VOL’s No.2 seed at the Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs beginning Tuesday. Freshman Courtney Williams took a corner kick to Nicole Bear, who volleyed the ball into the goal just two minutes into the match. Coach Joe Mamorno’s team goes to the playoffs for the third time in four years.

Manteca High outlasted East Union High 52-44 at Dalben Center last night to win its first VOL girls basketball title in nine years. Lady Buff Tiffany Guzman led all scorers with 18 points, 12 of those from the free throw line. Amy Haapanen paced the Lady Lancers with 12 points and Samantha Cooke added 11 more in a losing cause.

Adding finishing touches to another undefeated VOL soccer season, Sierra High bounced visiting Los Banos High 8-0 Thursday, behind sophomore Liz Alexander’s hat trick. The Lady Timberwolves enter Sac-Joaquin Division I playoffs as the VOL’s number 1 seed. Ginny Teunissen added to Alexander’s three goals with two of her own. Cherie Early, Lisa Esteves and Marisa Mercado each contributed a goal of their own. Coach Manuel Pires’s girls outshot Los Banos by a commanding 22-0 margin.

The Sierra High girls basketball team defeated Los Banos High 49-30 on the road Thursday evening to finish 7-7 in the VOL. No other details were available at press time.

With two scorers in the 30’s, East Union High’s golf team teed off the preseason with a resounding success, edging St. Mary’s High 202-205 at the Manteca Park Golf Course on Thursday. Lancer junior Josiah McDaniel earned medalist honors with a one-over-par 38.

Overcoming an 18-point deficit in the final four minutes of the game, Sierra High stunned West High 56-54 on Wednesday in boys basketball action. Cedrick Oxendine’s basket broke a tie for the T’wolf win. Alberto Carrera led all scorers with 16 points. Scott Thomson finished with 12 counters.

East Union High found itself on the wrong end of a 56-40 defeat at Dalben Center Wednesdsay evening to visiting Los Banos High. Despite spending time on the bench (foul trouble), Andrew Emery still led all scorers with 16 points in a losing cause.

Despite being stuck in a defensive game, Manteca High bounced host Oakdale High 43-34 on Wednesday in boys cage action. Adam Jacobs paced the Buffaloes with 10 points and 12 rebounds.
