Gyse Hulsebosch was brilliant on the bump for the Northgate 9-10 all-stars Wednesday at Brock Elliott Elementary as the starter mowed down 11 Tracy American B batters in a 4-2 win.
With the victory, Northgate will now move on to face either Salida or Lathrop Friday, just two wins away from a berth in the District 67 All-Star Tournament championship round.
Coming into the contest against a tough Tracy squad, Northgate manager Frank Romero knew that pitching would be all-important.
Hulsebosch delivered the goods, as the hurler struck out the side in the first two innings and rung up two each in the third and fourth.
“We decided to save our ace for a really tough game, and that’s exactly what this was,” Romero said. “He did a great job.”
Hulsebosch hit his pitch limit with two down in the fifth and his squad clinging to a 4-2 lead with runners on second and third.
Enter Devin Abrew.
Ignoring the pressure, Northgate’s hard-throwing lefty tossed three straight strikes to send down J.J. Jones and end the threat.
“(Abrew) did his job well,” Romero said.
Hulsebosch broke open a scoreless tie from the dish in the top of the third with a two-run triple that plated Ross Tisdell (singled) and Dominic Romero (walked).
Tracy answered with two in the home half after Matthew Nunes drilled a double to the wall in center then came around on a Northgate error.
But Northgate punched right back in the fourth when Andy Parcells reached on an error and Manuel Martinez walked.
Jake Harries, who was inserted as a courtesy runner for the catcher Parcells, touched on a passed ball, and after swiping second, Martinez made it 4-2 on another passed ball.
Abrew worked out of a one-out jam with runners at second and third in the sixth when he forced a pop-up to Hulsebosch at short and caught Nunes looking to end it.
“It was a great game; a really big win for us,” Romero said. “I just want to thank my coaches, Dean Parcells and Ron Cabeceiras. They’re great, great coaches.”
Northgate will play at 5:30 p.m. Friday on Field 2.
Manteca took a 1-0 lead into the third before Spreckels broke it open with three each in the third, fourth and fifth.
Steven Rios collected the win on the hill, and James Gonzalez closed it out.
Scott Teicheira hit a single and scored two runs, and Tyler Fitch touched as well.
