Entering the bottom of the third inning Friday night trailing the Brewers by four runs, the Phillies tied the game behind three consecutive two-out doubles and added four more runs in in the fifth inning thanks to two walks, two errors, multiple wild pitches and a pair of infield singles to give the Phillies an 8-4 win for the Ripon Little League majors championship at Veterans Park.
Grant Vander Maaten led off the Phillies third with a single. After a pair of strikeouts he scored on a double by Deegan Vrieling, Henry Berger plated Vrieling on a double, Nathan Gonzales (2 for 3, two RBI, double, two runs) doubled in Berger and Easton Cloward blooped a single to score Gonzales.
Trailing the Brewers 3-0 with two outs and the bases loaded in the third inning, Ryder Heuvel toed the rubber for the Phillies. After walking in a run, he struck out the next four batters he faced and retired six in a row, striking out five and allowing just one hit and two walks in 3.1 innings of work.
Owen Elsholz put the Brewers ahead 1-0 in the second inning when he scored on a bases-loaded walk to Gio Sandoval (two RBI). Jessy Vega and Ethan Munoz walked to lead off the Brewers third with Vega scoring on a fielder’s choice by Maverick Brum and Munoz coming on an Owen Elsholz fielder’s choice. Sandoval drew another bases-loaded walk to score Landon Viss, making the score 4-0.
The Phillies will play in the District 67 Tournament of Champions beginning next Saturday.
