MODESTO – It’s hard to mess up a hamburger.
Grill the patty, add the toppings and the condiments and place it on the bun.
Unless there’s a grease fire or you’re using ingredients that should have been trashed weeks ago, the All-American meat sandwich is a pretty straightforward way to go.
But when you get a good one, there’s nothing else like it in the world.
Enter Modesto’s Rockin B’s Burgers.
Tucked along the old part of McHenry Avenue near Five Points, this eatery that specializes in quality of a bygone era has become legendary with locals for its mouth-watering offerings.
The menu is simple – not overstuffed with dozens of burgers and dozens of toppings. But what they do offer is a flavorful bunch featuring exciting and downright explosive ideas combining things like avocado and jalapenos and the standard staple of bacon and cheese to create something that brings people back time-after-time.
“It’s the best burger I’ve had in a long time. It came recommended from a friend and it definitely lived up to the recommendation,” said diner Brian Mello after a lunch trip with a group of co-workers. “I like a good burger and this is definitely a place worth coming back to.”
And Mello isn’t alone.
Rockin B’s has garnered a four-and-a-half star rating on Yelp – the popular diner-rated online service that allows those that eat at an establishment to leave a review of what they thought about the food and the service. It surpasses other Modesto burger joints with the extra half-star, and some of the ratings – from far-away places like Los Angeles and Las Vegas – help give the homegrown mom-and-pop joint credibility from people who have no shortage of culinary options and experiences right at their fingertips.
Two of their most popular offerings are the “Shay Shay” – which boasts avocado, jalapenos, bacon and a choice of cheese – and the traditional “Ol’ Bill” which includes sautéed mushrooms, bacon and cheese.
Looking to change things up a bit? Why not add a fried egg? Or a guacamole spread? Both are options and both help give diners a choice of something different that plain old mayonnaise and mustard that they’re used to getting at traditional chain restaurants.
“I’m typically a Plain Jane when it comes to the food that I order, but I’ve tried things here that I wouldn’t have otherwise,” Mary Hickman said. “And I haven’t been disappointed. That says a lot to me about what they do.”
