Making sure struggling families in Manteca, Ripon, and Lathrop have a Christmas meal with turkey or a ham as the main dish is the next goal of Turkeys R Us.

With two weeks to go, the effort needs just under $10,000 to meet the dinner needs of 1,989 struggling families this Christmas.

The community came up with $15,940 to take care of the families at Thanksgiving. Organizers a week before Thanksgiving thought they were close to having the need covered only to discover last-minute requests by food closets in the three communities pushed the number of needy households from 1,500 to 1,989 due to a large number of people who have had hours cut back in the past year and who usually don’t ask for help.

Turkeys R Us has just over $5,000 toward the Christmas goal of $15,000. They are hoping to negotiate good prices for hams and turkeys that would reduce somewhat the need to raise almost $10,000 in two weeks in order to have hams and turkeys delivered in time for Christmas.

Organizers noted while a small segment of people seeking help with Christmas are on welfare, most are single mom households, households where one or two parents have been laid off or else had hours reduced the elderly on severely restricted incomes, and those who have become gravely ill.

If you can assist Turkeys R Us, contact Coldwell Banker Crossroads at 823-8141.

A donation of $10 will provide a turkey for a family while $50 will provide an entire holiday meal for a family of four.
