Five people from two vehicles died Tuesday in the heavy early morning fog on Van Allen Road at Highway 4 in eastern San Joaquin County, according to CHP spokesman James Smith.

The officer said the fatal crash occurred at 6:58 a.m. when an eastbound Nissan pickup truck with two occupants collided with a northbound Chevrolet Venture van with six farm workers inside entered the roadway from Van Allen Road.  Five of the six adult males in the van reportedly died at the scene and one who suffered major injuries was transported to a hospital.

The van was suspected to have crossed into Highway 4 directly in the path of the Nissan pickup and rolled over on its top after the collision on the north shoulder of the roadway.

The two occupants of the pickup truck received only minor injuries, according to the CHP, adding that the fog with a visibility of only some 100 feet contributed to the collision.
