60 YEARS OF CARING
Doctors Hospital marks 60th anniversary
DHM2
Doctors Hospital of Manteca honored physicians and employees for their many years of service.

Doctors Hospital of Manteca celebrated its 60th anniversary.

Opened on Feb. 26, 1962, the local hospital celebrated the milestone Friday with a special event consisting of hospital leadership, dignitaries, longtime physicians and employees, and members of the volunteer auxiliary.

Chief Executive Officer Eleze Armstrong recognized the frontline staff for providing 24/7 caring of patients and a moment of silence to honor the lives lost to COVID-19.

The anniversary program looked back at the history of Doctors Hospital of Manteca and the forecast of the future.

Among those recognized for their years of service included:

  • Dr. Karl Wolf – Serving patients since 1973
  • Dr. Howard Miller – Serving patients since 1977
  • Dr. Anil Sain – Serving patients since 1978
  • Dr. Craig Bobson – Serving patients since 1985
  • Dr. George Scott – Serving patients since 1985
  • Michael Brown – 45 years of service; hired in September 1976
  • Julie Taylor – 42 years of service; hired in March 1980
  • Connie Rocha – 41 years of service; hired in September 1980
  • Lisa Hoag – 37 years of service; hired in July 1984
  • Donna Nicholas – 37 years of service; hired in July 1984

The special event also paid tribute to the volunteer auxiliary members.

That’s the group formed back in November 1962 made up of women who volunteered their time and service to patients and the hospital.

Since then, the auxiliary – now made up of both women and men – has compiled an admirable record of service. They’ve contributed thousands of hours each year in benefiting the welfare of patients, visitors and employees of Doctors Hospital.

DHM is deeply rooted in the community, with the roots being planted back as far as 1955. Manteca civic leaders wanted a top-notch hospital in the community to eliminate the need to travel to Stockton or beyond for medical care.

Ground was broken on Aug. 2, 1961, for an 11,000 square-foot hospital costing $355,000 – equivalent to $3.2 million today.

DHM opened in 1962, licensed for 25 beds as a general acute care facility with 41 employees and seven physicians. Eual Baker was the first-ever administrator.

Today, the hospital has more than 525 employees along with more than 200 physicians on the medical staff while adding services and investing in state-of-the-art technologies to provide high levels of care locally.

In the last decade, DHM added to the outpatient footprint by opening an ambulatory surgery center, outpatient imaging center, and a multi-specialty center that included wound care services.

The hospital continues to do upgrades. Next up is ground breaking of the 30,000 square foot medical office space located directly across the parking lot from the hospital.

This project will allow for growth of medical services in Manteca, with completion of construction being targeted for 2023.
