Ripon Fire board will discuss special tax vs benefit assessment

The Ripon Consolidated Fire District will be conducting a special board meeting on Monday.

The 3 p.m. session will take place at Fire Department Station 1, 142 S Stockton Ave.

On the agenda is a discussion involving the “With Ripon Fire” Committee on conducting Special Tax vs Benefit Assessment.

The assessment – included was the defeat of last year’s Prop 218 election that would, if passed, would have generated new revenue stream to help fund the fire district’s operations and services – applies to properties within the RCFD’s 56-square-mile service area, and is calculated based on the size and number of structures and their usage

A special tax was brought up by RCFD at some of the recent Town Hall Q&A sessions.

Plans call for introducing a tax measure in early 2026.

Fire Chief Eric DeHart said that special tax was passed in the mid-1980s but it was “flat rate,” adding, “it was not enough to keep up with inflation.”

Required would be two-thirds support from voters.
