The Ripon Police Department’s Junior Police Academy for youngsters age 10 through 13 is scheduled from June 27 through July 1.

Although registration deadline was last week, Police Chief Ed Ormonde said at Tuesday’s Ripon City Council meeting that accommodation can still be made for fifth- through eighth- grade students interested in learning the steps to becoming a police officer along with the tools of the trade.

Cost is $25.

Qualifications include students having at least a “C” average, no criminal contact with Ripon police, and provide a report card to accompany the application.

The Advanced Junior Police Academy will follow.

That’s the two-week course for those who are of high school age.

Requirements include the applicant having already completed the Basic Junior Police Academy while maintaining at least a “C” average in the classroom – a report card in hand will be necessary in the process – and with no criminal contact with the local police department.

The Advanced Junior Police Academy is scheduled from July 11 through July 22 at the Ripon Police Station, 259 N. Wilma Ave.

The deadline to turn in applications is Friday, June 24. Cost is $45.

Class size is limited to 25 students.

Those accepted will receive a “Junior Police Academy” t-shirt, binder, and certificate of completion.

Each student will have an opportunity to engage in classroom activities such as physical training, mock traffic stops, DUI enforcement, conducting investigative scenarios, CPR / First Aid Certification (four-hour class), basic defensive tactics, field trips and guest speakers from other law enforcement agencies.
