The San Joaquin County District Attorney’s office is pursuing misdemeanor charges against Mayor Gary Singh and a local chiropractor regarding alleged violations of state election laws.
The DA announced Friday misdemeanor election charges have been filed against Singh and chiropractor Matthew Alexander.
Both were served notices to appear in the San Joaquin County Superior Court, following an investigation into election-related offenses occurring between Aug. 12 and Aug. 31, 2026.
Both individuals face two misdemeanor counts:
*Count 1: Offering payment or consideration to vote or register to vote (CA Elections Code § 18107.5).
*Count 2: Offering payment or consideration to vote for a particular person or measure (CA Elections Code § 18522).
Their initial court appearance is scheduled for Oct. 16 at 1:30 p.m. in Department M2.
The violation stems from what Alexander contends was an impromptu remark he’d give new patients who vote for Singh a $50 discount.
The video was being made for a Thursday social media series Singh has been posting promoting new local businesses.
Singh did not opt to edit Alexander’s remarks out of the video when it was posted.
A complaint regarding the video was made to the DA by the campaign consultant for his challenger in the Nov. 3 mayor’s, Jacob Naven.
Naven on Friday declined to make a comment on the DA’s decision to pursue chargers.
Singh on Friday, released the following statement:
“Yes, I am aware of the news today.”
“I am prepared to address these charges through the appropriate legal process, and I look forward to the facts being fully heard.”
“I remain confident in allowing that process to move forward, and I will not allow this matter to distract me from my responsibility to the people of Manteca.”
“My focus remains where it has always been: serving our residents, supporting our community and local businesses, and continuing the work was elected to do.”
“I am grateful to everyone who has reached out with their support and encouragement during this time.”
“I have always run a positive campaign focused on the good things happening in Manteca and the people who make our community special.”
“That will not change.”
“Because this matter is now before the court, I will respect the judicial process and will not comment further on the specifics of the case at this time.”
