Fourth-seeded Manteca won its Sac-Joaquin Section Division III playoff opener in quick order on Monday.
The Buffaloes swept all six singles matches and prevailed over No. El Capitan 7-2 at Manteca Regional Tennis Center. They earned a semifinal showdown with defending champion Placer, the No. 1 seed.
Hailie Kim and Reina Ngo, who faced off against each other in the Valley Oak League Singles Tournament final, led the way from the top of the Manteca (15-7-1) ladder.
Kim will defend her SJS Division II Individual Tournament title later in the week. She took care of El Cap’s Anisha Jain, 6-0, 6-1. Ngo, a freshman and the VOL runner-up, downed Ava Schneider, 6-0, 6-0.
Rae Limbago and Saihaj Ghuman shut out their opponents, Sophia Bamaca-Colbert and Taswita Gopireddy, from the Nos. 3 and 4 spots, respectively.
No. 5 Paisley Coenenberg coasted past Isabelle Alvarez, 6-3, 6-0. Ekam Ghuman won at No. 6 singles 6-0, 6-1 over Mehreen Khan.
“I thought we were well prepared,” Manteca coach MaryAnn Tolbert said. “It’s always nice knowing you got Hailie and Reina at the top of the lineup, knowing you more than likely start with two wins.
“I think everyone has come along nicely this season, and hopefully we’re peaking at the right time.”
El Capitan (12-5) did its damage at doubles.
At No. 1, Aahama Garcha and Mila Moua defeated Manteca’s Ziqi Huang and Cailtyn Vu, 6-1, 6-2. Bani Kaur and Angel Kaur took the No. 3 match 6-0, 6-0 against Julissa Paniagua and Julianna Ros.
Manteca’s No. 2 tandem of Alyson Alvarado and Cat Estrada Perez beat Aliya Barase and Bella Moua, 6-2, 6-2.
Placer (19-0) will host the Buffaloes next Monday, Nov. 9 in Auburn. The two last met in 2023. Manteca gave the then-No. 2 seeded Hillmen some fits in the semifinals before coming up short, 5-4.
Kim and Ngo will first compete in the SJS Individual Tournament starting Thursday at Johnson Ranch Racquet Club in Roseville.
