The high school art show season is in full swing.

This year’s inaugural San Joaquin County Art Show will be held in the San Joaquin County Office of Education in Stockton on Monday, May 9, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. There will be different categories of art such as: still life, portraits, abstract, realistic, landscapes, cityscapes, altered images, and more. Students can also choose to sell their artworks if they wish to.

The Best of San Joaquin High Art Show takes place in Wentworth Education Center at the San Joaquin County Office of Education, 2707 Transworld Drive, Stockton.

The art show is free and open to the public. Hundreds of pieces of art from a11 high schools within the county will be displayed.

Participants in the county art show will have placed in their high school and district art shows.

Sierra High School held its art show on April 12. The art show also featured performances by the band, choir, and theatre department.

The next step in the awards season was the Manteca Unified School District art show, which will be held at the district office in a first-floor conference room on April 25. This round was judged by a group of experts, local artists, and teachers outside of Manteca Unified School District. The top finishers of each category will go on to compete in the county art show.

Each category of art will have a first-, second-, and third-place winner that will receive a ribbon and a small cash prize. There are also additional prizes for the student who are best in class and for the best in show.

“It’s exciting to see how they compare across the district,” Anthony Dahl, District Music Coordinator and Interim Visual Art Coordinator, said.

There’s a lot of competition especially in an art show as diverse as this, where a hundred of pieces will be judged. Dahl said English artist David Hockney best describes how he’s feeling about the art show: “Art is about sharing. You wouldn’t be an artist unless you wanted to share.”

“I view the art show as an opportunity for our incredibly talented student artists to share with each other and with the community something that they are passionate about, and something that they put real effort into creating,” he added. “To be able to come together in-person and celebrate their creativity and hard work is the best part of the show in my mind.”
