Health officials are warning people to use caution today through Tuesday as the summer’s first sustained heat wave arrives in the Northern San Joaquin Valley.
Today’s high is expected to reach 104 degrees. The four-day heat wave peaks Sunday at 105 degrees before dropping slightly to 104 degrees on Monday. The triple digit weather is expected to end on Tuesday when the temperature reaches an even 100 degrees.
Relatively high humidity today – approaching 50 percent – is expected to create problems for some people who fail to curtail their physical activities and stay hydrated. It is expected to cool off to only 69 degrees overnight
The young and old are especially susceptible to heat related illness – and even death – as are those who are sensitive to heat. Pets also can face serious problems in heat.
Manteca Police noted that pets and children are still all too often left locked in cars with windows up or barely cracked during hot temperatures. It can prove fatal.
Manteca several years ago through the Community Emergency Response team (CERT) was able to prevent a woman’s death as she was in the first stages of heat stroke while they were conducting a precautionary door-to-door welfare check in mobile home parks.
Police suggest you check on elderly neighbors to make sure they are doing OK in the heat.
