MODESTO – The MJC Theatre Department will present the New Play Fest 2013 on June 13, 14, 15, 20, 21 and 22 at 7:30 p.m. in the Little Theatre of the Performing and Media Arts Center. The New Play Festival is a staging of world premiere plays written by students in the MJC playwriting class.
The six short, one-act plays are directed by theatre students and produced by Theatre Professor Michael Lynch. The plays include both comedies and dramas showcasing a variety of themes. Works to be presented are:
*"Brazillians, Manscaping, Mom & Me" by Christine Allegretti. A daughter deals with her "new mom" who decides it is time to start dating again.
*"The Robbery of the Beauty School Burnout" by Paige Jenkins (winner of this year's MJC Humanities Contest in Playwriting). A female burglar breaks into the home of a beauty school "burnout" and faces unexpected problems.
* "Beloved" by Jennifer Stonechipher. A young couple are planning their wedding day while another man is determined to stop it with surprising results.
* "The Rehearsal" by Christopher Wells. A director is trying to convince an actor not to continue bursting into song during a serious drama.
*"15 Minutes" by Timothy Glidewell. A young woman goes speed dating with several men on the same night in the same restaurant.
*"Just One Man: An Action Movie/Play" by Nidal Bukhari & Tyler Kelly. One man's quest for revenge. A play for people who love action movies.
"All six of these plays are unique, clever and very well-written. When looking at them, I often forget they are written and performed by students. Very professional and exciting theatre," said Lynch
Tickets are $10 general admission and $8 for students and senior citizens and will be available at the door 90 minutes before each performance.
