Petco donates $10K for canine vests

FRENCH CAMP – Bill Houchins, Petco’s regional manager presented the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office with a $10,000 grant award.
 
The money, which came from the Petco Foundation, was presented Friday at the Sheriff’s facility in French Camp. The grant award was used to purchase 10 K9 Stab/Ballistic vests, 12 cooling systems for the patrol vehicles, and 12 slings.

The lightweight Stab/Ballistic vests will provide the Sheriff’s police canines with added protection while aiding Sheriff’s deputies during deployments and apprehensions.

The cooling systems for the cars which circulate cool air from the front of the vehicle to the back where the canines are kept. If the air conditioner or patrol vehicle malfunction while the handler is away from the vehicle and the inside temperatures reach unsafe levels, the system will alert the handler remotely.

The slings will assist handlers to raise and lower their canine partners from a roof or attic or other areas during deployments without causing injury.

The San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Canine Unit currently consists of 10 K-9 teams. The unit is supported by the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Foundation for equipment and training that are not covered in the annual budget of the Sheriff’s Office.
