The “Ropin’ on the River Rodeo” promises to bring the excitement of the Old West to Lathrop and Manteca in a fund raising effort for the benefit of the Give Every Child a Chance tutoring program June 4-5.
Hosted by Dell’Osso Family Farm near I-5 and the Highway 120 Bypass, the rodeo is billed as “A City of Lathrop Signature Event” and geared for professional riders as well as for children from all the nearby communities. Grandstands are being trucked in that will accommodate 2,500 rodeo fans seated around the arena.
Underwritten by the Professional Rodeo Association, the two-day GECAC event promises to be a family packed entertainment extravaganza featuring some of the toughest, award winning, livestock and rodeo athletes in the region.
World champion bull rider Ted Nuce formerly of Manteca will make a special guest appearance.
In addition to Give Every Child a Chance, the major sponsors include Dell’Osso Farm, the City of Lathrop and Tracy Ford. Additional sponsors are currently being sought.
The arena events will include saddle bronc riding, bull riding, bareback riding, tie down roping, steer wrestling, women’s breakaway roping, barrel racing, team roping header, team roping heeler and the pee wee barrel racing and mutton bustin’ that will all be held before the grandstand crowd.
In-N-Out Burger is sponsoring the kids’ Barrel Racing Buckle Event that is expected to be limited to children under the age of 13.
The Mutton Bustin’ event for children from three to six years old and under 60 pounds in a racing contest that has them lying across the backs of sheep and holding on around their bellies. The child winning the event will get his or her own personal rodeo belt buckle.
The buckle designs were created by GECAC administrative assistant Lisa Rowe who has been working to help coordinate the rodeo since its inception. Susan Dell’Osso is credited with working tirelessly with the Give Every Child a Chance board of directors to bring all the loose ends together for a successful fund raiser during the last year.
Shim Lacy has been charged with recruiting a rodeo court that will produce a “Ropin’ on the River Rodeo Queen” to reign over the first annual event.
Six Clydesdale horses are being included in the rodeo courtesy of Charlie Evans of the Ripon Cal-Crush highway construction firm. And there will be room for more than 80 concessionaires and vendors to set out their products throughout the attractions and just north of the parking that will accommodate almost 1100 vehicles.
Parking is going to be free and the only charge for entrance is for those entering the actual rodeo arena. The entertainment section outside the arena will have no admission charge.
Heading up the entertainment will be a family barbeque kick-off Saturday morning. All of the Dell’Osso Farm signature attractions are scheduled to be open for the weekend event.
Those include the zip lines, the speedway, the tire climb, and gem mining for kids as well as the General Store. There is also a first class petting zoo in the planning for the children to enjoy.
Included in the entertainment for rodeo-goers will be the Diablo Ladies Drill Team, pony rides, celebrity matches team roping and a “Cowboy Church” at 10 that Sunday morning under the direction of Manteca Pastor Mike Dillman.
All proceeds will go toward the tutoring of some 4,000 children through the efforts of Give Every Child a Chance with its more than 30 sites manned mostly by volunteers.
Charge for adults for admission into the arena is $20, seniors 55 and over $15 and children three to 12 is $15. Gates will open at 10 a.m. and the rodeo gets underway at 2.
