MODESTO (AP) — Authorities say a 5-year-old Modesto boy was struck and killed by a city bus while crossing the street in front of his school.

The crash occurred around noon Wednesday outside Tuolumne Elementary School in Modesto.

California Highway Patrol Officer Eric Parsons said the boy was crossing the street to meet his mother at her vehicle on the other side when he was hit by the Modesto Area Express bus.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Parsons says the bus driver did not see the boy, but felt a bump. The boy, whose name was not released, was pinned underneath. He was not in a crosswalk.

Parsons says there is no indication that speed, alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash.
