SF school district loses $160K due to Giants parade

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Thousands of San Francisco kids apparently skipped school to attend last week's Giants World Series parade.

The school district had sent a letter home to parents on the eve of the victory parade urging them to send their children to school rather than head to the parade.

But more than 4,100 students were absent, costing the district nearly $160,000 in California funding. The state pays $38.27 each day a student shows up for school.

About 49,000 students attend San Francisco public schools each day. On parade day Wednesday, just 44,700 kids made it to class.

The majority of students skipping classes were from high schools, where about 23 percent of students were absent. That compares to about 3.5 percent on a normal day.

Man pleads not guilty to SF bus vandalism

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A 22-year-old man accused of smashing the windshield of a city bus when World Series celebrations in San Francisco got out of hand has pleaded not guilty in the case.

Gregory Graniss, charged with vandalism and one count of willful tampering with a passenger transit vehicle, pleaded not guilty to the charges during his arraignment Monday.

Graniss was arrested last Tuesday after a photo was published of him allegedly using a barricade to smash the front windows of the bus.

Investigators say tips from the public led them to Graniss. Police are still looking for more people, including another man caught in a photo smashing the bus and two others captured on video setting fire to the bus.

The $700,000 bus was destroyed in the fire.

Apple sells 3M iPads after Mini launch

CUPERTINO  (AP) — Apple says it sold 3 million iPads of all kinds in the first three days it sold the new Mini model.

Apple started selling the Mini on Friday, starting at $329. It's a third smaller than the full-size iPad.

The sales figure compares with 1.5 million iPads sold in the first three days after Apple launched the third-generation iPad in March and cut the price of the iPad 2.

The full-size iPad got an update on Friday as well, with a faster processor and a better front-facing camera.

The Mini model sold out at 60 percent of U.S. Apple stores.

Police fatally shoot naked, knife-wielding man

FREMONT . (AP) — Fremont police say they fatally shot a naked, knife-wielding man who was chasing his wife.

The  37-year-old San Jose man was killed Sunday after refusing officers' orders to drop the knife.

Police said they responded when a roommate of the slain man's wife called to report the attack.

Responding officers said they found a woman being chased from her apartment by the man, who was naked and carrying a knife.

Police said they called for the man to drop the knife and that they fired their weapons after he refused.
