MERCED,  (AP) — A cook at a county jail in Central California is behind bars after officials say he smuggled in marijuana, tobacco and cell phones for inmates.

Merced County Sheriff’s Deputy Delray Shelton says 57-year-old David Louis Mace was arrested at home Thursday on suspicion of bringing controlled substances into the John Latorraca Correctional Facility in Merced and allowing inmates to use controlled substances.

His arrest came after a two-month investigation during which deputies searched the jail’s kitchen and found a half pound of marijuana and tobacco.

Mace has worked at the jail since 2002.
