SAN BERNARDINO  (AP) — Authorities in San Bernardino County are warning of a phone scam seeking to bilk residents out of phony fines for supposedly missing jury duty.

The San Bernardino Sun reported Monday that victims have been receiving land-line calls from a man claiming to be a “major” with the Sheriff’s Department. The suspect informs the victims that they have failed to comply with “jury duty,” resulting in the issuance of an arrest warrant.

The suspect then threatens the victim with arrest unless they pay a fine ranging from $1,200 to $2,000 through the use of a Green Dot debit card available at retail stores.

Residents are reminded that the Sheriff’s Department does not call people who fail to comply with jury duty, nor does it collect fines to settle arrest warrants.
