• MAGNITUDE-3.9 QUAKE SHAKES LAKE COUNTY: SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Two small earthquakes have jolted a remote area of Northern California, startling residents in Lake County.

The U.S. Geological Survey said a magnitude-3.9 quake occurred at 4:01 p.m. Sunday and was centered three miles northeast of the Geysers geothermal development and four miles west of Cobb.

It came a minute after a magnitude-3.0 quake that struck the same area.

Jessica Stottsberry, a manager at Hardester’s Markets and Hardware in Cobb, said she saw wine bottles and plants rattle on the shelves. She said the quake didn’t cause any damage to the shop.



• FIRE NEAR HIGHWAY 395 NOW 60 PERCENT CONTAINED: BIG PINE (AP) — Fire officials say a wildfire burning near a main highway on the eastern slopes of the Sierra Nevada is now 60 percent contained.

California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection spokeswoman Julie Hutchinson says a fire being called the Fish Fire has consumed about 1,100 acres west of Highway 395 near the Inyo County community of Big Pine.

Hutchinson says portions of the fire had moved right up the highway’s edge, forcing officials to shut down the highway near Big Pine Saturday afternoon.

Highway 395 is now open through the area, but drivers are being asked watch out for fire crews still working in the area.

Authorities had also issued voluntary evacuations for Big Pine, but those have been lifted and an evacuation center set up has been closed.



• SACRAMENTO POLICE KILL MAN WITH RIFLE: SACRAMENTO (AP) — A man has died after being shot by Sacramento police officers during a struggle for control of a gun.

Police Sgt. Andrew Pettit says when two officers stopped the teen, identified by authorities as Ascencion Herrera, and a second person around 6:30 p.m. Saturday, officers saw the butt of the rifle protruding from under Herrera’s sweatshirt.

As one of the officers tried to detain Herrera, police say he grabbed the rifle and became involved in a struggle with the officer.

The second officer opened fire, hitting Herrera “multiple” times in the upper body.



• KILLING OF BEAR TRIGGERS CRITICISM: TRUCKEE  (AP) — The trapping and killing of a black bear that damaged a Lake Tahoe-area home after entering it through an open window is prompting criticism.

Jason Holley of the California Department of Fish and Game says the female bear entered an Alpine Meadows home last week and caused “verifiable property damage.”

Holley says the homeowner later requested a depredation permit to kill the bear, and a Fish and Game biologist issued the permit after assessing the damage.

Ann Bryant of the Tahoe-based BEAR League said the bear was beloved by locals and gentle.

She says the homeowner likely could have avoided the problem by closing the window, and the bear should have been spared.



• MOTHER BEAR, 2 CUBS VISIT LA SUBURB: ALTADENA  (AP) — A mother bear and two cubs appear to have headed back into the hills after a visit to the suburbs of Los Angeles, where they took a dip in a backyard hot tub.

City News Service reports the three bears were spotted Saturday on a four-acre property in Altadena, near the edge of Angeles National Forest. The bears were nowhere to be found when sheriff’s deputies arrived.

Black bears were introduced into the San Gabriel Mountains in 1933. Sheriff’s deputies say all local bears are descendants of 11 “problem” bears relocated from Yosemite National Park.
