THOUSAND OAKS THIEVES STEAL $4 FROM STORE: THOUSAND OAKS  (AP) — At least three burglars knocked in the door of a Ventura County produce market, fled with cash, and led police on a high speed vehicle chase that ended when their car smashed into a fence.

Their take: two rolls of nickels totaling $4.

The owner of Latino Market in Thousand Oaks tells the Ventura County Star the cost to fix the damaged door will be much greater than the hit to the cash register.

After the crash, police say three or four people ran from the car. About 25 deputies with helicopter support and a K-9 unit combed the area and went house to house during the search.

Police eventually arrested two suspects. A third man got away.

ARSON FIRES PROBED IN FRESNO NEIGHBORHOOD: FRESNO  (AP) — Authorities are investigating a string of 16 arson fires set last week in a Fresno neighborhood.

Crews responded to 12 burning plastic trash containers in the Pinedale area on Tuesday alone.

On Friday, firefighters responded to six blazes, including one inside an abandoned house and one in a large trash bin next to a business.

Resident Jay Cordero tells the newspaper he and his neighbors are pulling their trash containers back onto their property from the road after they are dumped to make them less likely fire targets.

CALIF. MAN ACCUSED OF STEALING ARMY GEAR: SUSANVILLE (AP) — Authorities say a U.S. Army civilian employee working at a storage depot in Northern California is facing federal charges accusing him of trying to smuggle sophisticated military equipment recently returned from Afghanistan and Iraq that had been shipped to the facility.

Federal court documents say Devon Gregory Biggs Jr. is accused of trying to smuggle nearly $85,000 worth of equipment from the Sierra Army Depot in Lassen County.

Authorities say the 36-year-old Biggs was the lead employee at the base and was in charge of receiving and categorizing military gear returned from overseas.

Court documents say it is unknown how long the alleged thefts took place. Biggs was taken into custody last week after law enforcement officials said he was seen taking several items out of a warehouse.
