FULLERTON (AP) — An assistant principal at a Southern California high school has been temporarily removed from campus while district officials assess his pulling a gay student offstage for saying he hoped he could someday marry the love of his life.

Superintendent George Giokaris said that Vice Principal Joe Abell of Fullerton Union High School worked at district offices Monday and it was uncertain where he would be placed next.

Abell apologized to 17-year-old Kearian Giertz both privately and over the school’s public address system after the incident two weeks ago during the school’s “Mr. Fullerton” competition.

Giertz tells the Register he does not believe Abell should be fired and shouldn’t be viewed as homophobic, but the school and district need to be more tolerant of gay students.
