Two Manteca events are being staged to remember those slain at Sandy Hook School.

The first is before dawn on Friday when a crowd is expected to gather at a parking lot at Main Street and Yosemite Avenue to honor the memory of 20 children and six adults killed last Friday at the Connecticut elementary school.   

The second is a candlelight vigil on Saturday at 5 p.m. at the Sikh Temple on the southeast corner of Woodward Avenue and Airport Way.

Friday’s “Walk 27” is a viral movement from coast to coast that began in Florida. People are being asked throughout the country to gather at the same time – 6:30 a.m. Manteca time and 9:30 a.m. on the East Coast – and to wear the green and white school colors of the Sandy Hook Elementary School.

“Together as a whole we can help heal the hearts of those who feel lost in this horrific tragedy,” said a Manteca woman who asked to remain unidentified. “If you are with me, please participate in this event which will take place this Friday morning all over the world!  I hope you can join me in this time of need.”

She further asked that everyone bring a bottle of soap bubbles so bubbles can be blown into the air at 6:57 a.m. to commemorate the victims.

Saturday’s candlelight vigil is an open invitation to the entire community. Organizers noted it is not just to “commemorate departed innocent souls” but to also bring the community together.
