VENTURA  (AP) — Ventura County is mulling a ban on fixed-gear bicycles on park trails after a hit-and-run accident that left a rider with severe injuries.

Parks director Ron Van Dyck says the September crash involved two bicyclists on the Ojai Valley Trail. He told the Ventura County Star the rider who fled the scene was on a “fixie,” or bicycle without brakes.

Since fixies lack brakes, the rider slows down by using their legs or riding in reverse. Such bikes are popular among urban cyclists.

The county Board of Supervisors recently approved a first reading of the rule restricting fixed-gear bicycles on trails. It will meet on Nov. 26 for a second reading of the ordinance.
