Sadie Cabral, 93, entered into eternal rest on December 16, 2010 in Manteca, California after a long illness.  She was born Salvatrice Carmella Graziella Cala in Rochester, New York on August 16, 1917.  Her family arrived in Manteca on July 4, 1920, where she chose to spend the rest of her life.  She is survived by her sons; Darryl Cabral and Tim Cabral both of Manteca and Dennis Cabral and his wife Katie of San Francisco.  She also leaves behind 2 granddaughters, Erin and Emily Cabral of San Francisco; a sister Grace Hoffman of Menifee, California and a brother, Joseph Cala of Studio City, California.  She was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Anthony Cabral; her parents Michael and Michelina Cala; and a brother Alfonso Cala.

Sadie attended the original Yosemite Grammar School and graduated from Manteca High School in 1935.  She then attended Goodrich Beauty College and began her career as a hairstylist and business owner in 1936.

She was known for her smile synonymous with her optimistic, loving and generous personality.  In the Manteca business community she was often referred to as “The First Lady of Manteca” and a “One Woman Chamber of Commerce.”  She was the owner operator of Sadie’s Salon, Manteca’s oldest originally owned business which continues to operate and thrive.  It began in 1936 in her home on Grant Street and in 1958 moved to the shopping center her husband Tony built on the 500 block of East Yosemite Avenue.

Throughout the years she has been honored with many accolades and awards most notably:  Manteca High School Hall of Fame (1991), Susan B. Anthony, Women of Achievement Award (1997), Manteca Chamber of Commerce Hall of Fame (in Business 1997), and the Commissioner’s Award for Lifetime Achievement by the California Cosmetology Association (1999).

She continued to oversee her business until her health no longer permitted.  She was a member of the Manteca Historical Society, St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, and St. Anthony Y.L.I.

Sadie was greatly loved and will be missed by many.  In lieu of flowers donations may be made to St. Vincent de Paul Society, 505 E. North Street, Manteca, CA. 95336 or the Manteca Historical Society, P.O. Box 25, Manteca, CA. 95336.

A visitation is scheduled for Sunday, Dec. 19, 2010 at 1 to 4 p.m. with a Rosary to follow at 4 p.m. at PL Fry & Son Funeral Home, 290 N. Union Road, Manteca.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be on Monday, December 20, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, 505 E. North Street, Manteca.  Burial will be private.
