Lathrop sales tax jump could cost city business
Placeholder Image

Editor, Manteca Bulletin,

If the citizens of Lathrop approve an increased sales tax, it could negatively impact two major retailers in town. Would customers shop at the SaveMart and Target in Manteca instead of Lathrop to avoid paying additional tax? What if a person buys something at one store and wants to return it at another one? What happens to the extra tax?

Smaller businesses might also suffer if customers go to other communities to make purchases.

The Lathrop City Council has already spent over $75,000 on researching this measure. How much more will be spent during the campaign season? And, if it is implemented, how much will it cost to set up and run an entity to manage the program?
