Like it or not we are all Americans

Editor, Manteca Bulletin,

Concerning the 5 students who chose to wear American flag shirts on Cinco De Mayo:  Cinco de Mayo is a celebration of Mexico’s victory over the French in 1862. I think it has become a celebration of Mexican heritage. I am quite sure the Morgan 5 wore the shirts to antagonize the Mexicans. But it should not have worked.

The real question has not been asked and probably never will be addressed. Why should wearing an American flag antagonize a person celebrating their heritage? In his column, Ruben Navarette, seems to miss this point. The only valid point he makes is that the boys were  intentionally defying the school. I agree. And they should be punished accordingly. However, it does not address the underlying issue. Why would displaying our flag on their holiday be offensive? It should not be offensive to anyone. Does this mean I should be offended when I see the Mexican flag on July 4th? Of course not.

This incident could have provided a great opportunity for a discussion of how we are different and yet part of the melting pot of America. Instead, it has been squandered in endless bickering and finger pointing. We all have heritages to celebrate. But we also all have one heritage to celebrate. Like it or not we are all Americans. This is our country and we should all be proud of it. I know I am.

 We need seafood
place, book store
Editor, Manteca Bulletin,

A suggestion for city officials - invest in more fresh seafood restaurants ,and how about a Red Lobster. If they invest wisely, they could afford it. We also need a Barnes & Noble or Border’s Book Store in our own area so we all don’t have to struggle going long distance just to get a book store. It’s good for business meetings, students, retirees and babies.

Come on, it’s time for a change, Manteca, enough already putting in more McDonald’s and Subways.

Think about something else instead of cold cuts and burgers. You can go to grocery stores for those items.
