Andrew Bonner’s phenomenal summer run continued last week with an outstanding effort in the 39th annual Junior America’s Cup at Hiwan Golf Club in Evergreen, Colo.
The Ripon resident helped a team of Northern California golfers capture the team title on Friday, as they edged out their Southern California rivals 640-652 in the three-day stroke-play event. The California teams led after day 1 with mirroring 210 scores. Seventeen teams from the western United States competed, including two from Canada — Alberta and British Columbia.
Bonner surely did his part for Team NorCal. He shot 71-70-72 on the par-70 course for a three-day total of 213 — good for a two-way share of second place team teammate Jonathon De Los Reyes.
Jonah Texeira of San Diego topped the field (70-69-72—211). Northern California’s Bryson DeChambeau also made the top-five, taking fourth (72-73-69—214).
Bonner still has left work to do over the summer before entering his junior year at Ripon High.
Next Monday, he will compete in the California Boys state Championship North/South Cup in San Jacinto, then he will return to team competition Aug. 12-14 for the Hogan Cup in Portland, Ore.
Bonner is currently ranked fourth among 14-17-year-old boys in the Junior Golf Association of Northern California.
