East Union High snapped a four-game skid Friday while defeating crosstown rival Sierra High convincingly, 55-20.

But the scoreboard was hardly indicative of the battle that took place at Daniel Teicheira Memorial Stadium, according to Lancers coach Mike Kuhnlenz

"It was much closer early on. We're glad to have escaped with a win," he said.

East Union (1-3 Valley Oak League, 4-5 overall) held a 21-14 advantage prior to halftime. But then senior running back David Flores reeled off the first of his three touchdowns, finding plenty of real estate while racing 44 yards to pad his team's lead, 29-14.

The Timberwolves (0-4, 1-8) marched the opening drive to inside the East Union 10 on their first possession.

With a chance to jump out on top, Sierra saw its 27-yard field goal blocked by Dylan Lee.

Quarterback AJ Vasquez took it from there, completing four of his first five passes including a jump-ball toss to the corner end zone to Lee for the early score.

Sierra then took advantage of a turnover, with Joey Mendez coming up with the interception.

Timberwolves were helped out with Anthony Grady picking up 18 yards coupled with a pass interference penalty on third down to keep the drive alive.

Quarterback Tim Sarginson, following an 18 yard run by Anthony Grady and pass interference call on EU to keep the drive alive, hit Paul Barrios with the short pass.

Barrios found a big opening enroute to a 21-yard score.

On the ensuing kickoff, Rafael Espinosa gave his team excellent field position with his 50-yard return to Sierra 28.

Moments later, Emilio Perez powered his way in for a 1-yard TD.

Perez added another touchdown on Sierra's next possession, scoring this time from two yards out.

The Timberwolves reached into their bag of tricks. Sarginson delivered a short pass to Barrios, who completed the hook-and-ladder to Grady, who raced down the sidelines to complete the 44-yard scoring play.

Sierra coach Jeff Harbison later said that his team had practiced that play.

Grady, who rushed for 62 yards on 21 carries and caught five passes for 76 yards, scored again in the third quarter.

"This game was a result of our lack of participation in an off-season, on-season weight program," Harbison later said.

Kuhnlenz called it "a sloppy game."

Flores scored on runs of 64 and 1 in the second half for EU.

Nikolas Luna, who had an interception, caught a 29-yard TD pass from Lee.

Carson Sanders returned a fumble 67 yards for a score.

The Lancers, who will take on Kimball next week, racked up 327 yards on the ground.

Flores led the way with 151 yards on 10 carries while Perez and Lee both had 85 rushing yards.

Sierra will face Central Catholic next Friday.
