Local high school football teams will finally get a chance to tangle with somebody else.

The season is almost a week away from starting, and to prepare they’re participating in scrimmages this Friday and Saturday.

Ripon is hosting four schools, including Sierra, for a four-team jamboree Friday at Stouffer Field. Ripon and Sierra’s freshmen will square off at 4 p.m. All four will field JV and varsity squads. JV action begins at 5:45, and varsity at 7:30.

Lathrop and East Union will get to match up in a jamboree hosted by Orestimba in Newman on Friday from 7:30-9:30 p.m. Sac-Joaquin Section Division III champion Manteca is heading up to Elk Grove for Monterey Trail’s scrimmage.

On Saturday, Ripon Christian goes head-to-head with Linden starting 10 a.m.

SJS schools are in their third week of official practices since starting on July 25. Official contests for all varsity fall sports, except water polo, begin Friday, Aug. 19. Water polo starts Aug. 26.

Five area schools are hosting zero-week football games on Aug. 19: East Union at Ripon, Vista del Lago at Manteca, Hughson at Sierra, Bradshaw Christian at Lathrop and Central Valley Christian at Ripon Christian.
