Knights stun BVC with big first half

SALIDA – Ripon Christian’s run defense was as stingy as could be Friday night under the lights at Modesto Christian High.

The Knights gave up just one rushing yard and linebacker Will Kamps finished with three sacks, a punt block and a special teams touchdown during a 47-0 victory against Big Valley Christian.

“I thought we played really good and flew to the ball,” said the sophomore Kamps. “We just rallied to the ball and brought it to them.”

Ripon Christian (2-1) scored 41 first-half points and forced a running clock for the final two quarters.

Still, Ripon Christian’s first-year head coach Randy Fasani wasn’t fully satisfied with his team’s performance.

“We’re actually disappointed that we made way too many mistakes in the first half,” Fasani said. “To be the best you have to beat the best, and we’re not going to beat Mariposa and Le Grand playing like this.”

Ripon Christian scored on five of its six first-half possessions, not including Kamps’ blocked punt and recovery that he took into the end zone to make it 27-0.

Ripon Christian senior Andrew Brown (13 carries, 128 yards) scored his first of three touchdowns in the first quarter on a 1-yard dash.

The game’s first score came with 5:22 left in the first, following the first of two blocked punts in the game.

Ripon Christian junior quarterback Billy Marr (9 of 17 with 97 yards passing) tossed his only TD of the night to tight end Jared Stuit, a 5-yard hook-up to make it 14-0.

On the ensuing possession, Kamps came up with a third-down sack that forced one of BV’s four punts. Big Valley (1-3) also had five total turnovers with two fumbles.

Marr hooked up with Stuit for a 25-yard strike that set up Brown’s second score from 22 yards out with just eight seconds left in the opening quarter.

On the first play of the second frame, Kamps came up with another sack that forced another BV punt. The 6-foot, 190-pounder blocked the punt himself, scooped up the loose ball and stumbled in from 6 yards.

“I think we’re getting more physical and flying to the ball, yet we need to cover the pass a little bit better,” Fasani concluded. “We missed far too many blocks, which prevented us from having big plays.”

RC’s Casey Kamper scored the Knights’ fifth touchdown from 1 yard away after his 13-yard gain helped set it up. That was after Stuit (four catches, 61 yards, TD) recovered a fumble.

Brown made it 41-0 with a 4-yard score with 1:06 left in the half.

Junior fullback Kevin Kramer found the end zone in the fourth quarter on a 9-yard carry that made up the final.

Ripon Christian will open up Southern League play on the road against Mariposa at 7:30 p.m. next Friday.
