STOCKTON — The East Union High Lancers played their best game of the season Friday at the home of the Cougars.
They defeated Weston Ranch High in the Valley Oak League clash, 48-12.
"We found ourselves," said EU coach Willie Herrera. "We competed tonight with class and courage."
The Lancers (2-3 VOL, 3-6 overall), who spread the ball-carrying duties — Raylen Carter led the way, gaining 197 of his team's 405 rushing yards on 11 carries — scored on their first two possessions en route to a 28-0 halftime lead.
Marquise Higgins hit pay dirt on a 48-yard interception, while quarterback JoJo Espinosa threw a touchdown pass to Trinidad Diaz and scored another on a short run.
Matthew Slight also found the end zone in the first quarter on a 7-yard run.
Leo Bonilla had a 4-yard TD run in the third quarter, increasing his team's advantage, 34-0.
Alex Alexander, Andrew Mount, and Anthony Salcido also helped out the ground game.
On defense, Omar Sanchez and Brian Gipson also picked off passes and Ben Green and Higgins were among those who registered sacks.
Weston Ranch (0-5, 0-9) was playing just its second home game of the season.
The Cougars did all of their scoring in the fourth quarter with a running clock.
Carter's 83-yard touchdown towards the end of the third had provided East Union with a 41-0 lead. He had scored from 15 yards out late in the game.
Amier Bowen twice connected with Fletcher Pitts Jr. on TD pass of 70- and 65- yards during that stretch.
Pitts caught five passes for 164 yards.
"We're still not executing," said Weston Ranch coach Marcelo Zamarripa of his team's overall performance. "We're beating ourselves."
His Cougars end the season next week with visiting Sierra. East Union welcomes Manteca and needs an upset win to have a chance at qualifying for the postseason.
