STOCKTON — The Lathrop High Spartans closed out non-league play Friday with a one-sided 28-13 loss to Patterson.
The Tigers employed a balanced attack led by senior running back Dasen Pettis, who racked a game-high 194 yards on 26 carries while scoring a pair of touchdowns.
Freshman quarterback Jacob Pierce made some timely throws to keep several drives alive.
"We tried to attack them inside-outside, and outside-inside," said Lathrop coach Ryan Teicheira, who's looking to have his team ready to play by next week's WAC clash at Pacheco.
The Spartans (2-1) were unable to get their offense untracked until midway through the second half.
By then, the Tigers (1-2) had built a 21-0 lead.
Patterson scored, orchestrating a drive after stopping the Spartans at midfield midway through the second quarter.
Pettis found a seam in Lathrop's red zone, scoring from the 12 to help give his team a 7-0 lead.
The Spartans earlier had turned back the Tigers on a fourth-down play deep in its territory with Eric Lucatero leading the charge.
The Spartans — in their temporary home at Weston Ranch (the home field is currently undergoing renovations) — also had a turnover late in opening quarter with Pablo Pena coming up with the interception.
Pettis continued to key the Patterson ground game in the second half. He scored his second touchdown of the game early in the third on a 5-yard run.
The Tigers had good field position on their next possession. They grinded out yards behind the running of Pettis, who yielded to teammate Ronin Cantu inside the Lathrop 10.
Cantu's 5-yard scoring run boosted the lead, 21-0.
But then the Spartans began to find the way with Pena exploding for a 47-yard gain to help pickup his team.
"Pablo is a great running back. He's so hard to bring down," said Teicheira.
A few plays later, Pena scored on a 7-yard run.
Patterson answered back with another score in the fourth. Cantu delivered on an 18-yard run.
Pena, who finished with a team-high 137 yards on 15 attempts, closed out the scoring with his 2-yard run late in the game.
The Tigers then ran out the clock in the final two minutes to the seal the win.
