Sierra has built a reputation on offense in recent years.
It’s typically a high-tempo spread attack orchestrated by a dual-threat quarterback flanked by tall, athletic receivers and dynamic running backs — a puzzle that few defenses have been able to solve.
How have the Timberwolves looked on the other side of scrimmage so far in 2014?
Not too shabby.
The defense pitched another shutout Friday night at Daniel Teicheira Memorial Stadium, where the Timberwolves administered a 56-0 beatdown of visiting Central Valley of Ceres to improve to 2-0. Last week’s impressive 54-7 victory at Ripon was marred only by a touchdown allowed by the special-teams unit.
“The best has yet to come,” said Sierra linebacker Trevon McCray, who also starts at left guard on offense. “We have a lot of (room for) growth. We’re making some mistakes here (and) there so all of us can always get better.”
Scary.
Sierra surrendered just 86 yards of offense and six first downs, two of which were gift wrapped for Central Valley (0-1) thanks to 15-yard penalties. Andrew Guevara accounted for two of the team’s five sacks after coming up with two in the season opener.
The defense also factored into the scoring, as sophomore safety Nashon Tamiano scooped up a fumble forced by Guevara and returned it 41 yards to give the Timberwolves a 35-0 lead with 7:34 to go in the second quarter.
The second-string defense took over the reins late in the third quarter and preserved the shutout.
“Tonight really was a whole team victory,” Sierra coach Jeff Harbison said. “Our second half was played by non-starters. Everybody got quality minutes and did a great job. Our backups on the defensive side of the ball executed. Getting the goose egg is big for our defense.”
As for the offense? Same old, same old.
Mark Paule ran his touchdown total to 10 after scampering for three more Friday night while piling up 221 yards on 24 attempts. Quarterback Devin Nunez missed on only two of his nine pass attempts and threw for 100 yards. His touchdown passes to Chris Stevens and Ryan Vasquez went for 32 and 24 yards.
Even backup QB Nick Lucchetti got in on the action. Early in the second quarter, Lucchetti hit a wide-open Hunter Johnson on a 68-yard halfback option toss to expand the Timberwolves’ lead to 28-0.
Sierra amassed 438 yards of offense.
“Offensively, they’re firing on all cylinders right now and it’s great to see this early in the season,” Harbison said. “Kids are making their blocks, ball carriers are running hard, receivers are catching the ball and Devin is putting the ball where it needs to be thrown.”
