Central Valley came out and drew first blood with a leadoff home run to start the contest, but that solo shot proved to be the beginning of the end for the Hawks in East Union’s 26-1 shellacking Friday in Valley Oak League play.

East Union responded by sending 16 hitters to the plate in a 10-run first inning, signaling the demise for Central Valley in the game’s opening minutes. Jillian Goulart, Cassie Waggy and Brittany Lamar all had four hits in the contest, with Goulart and Waggy scoring five runs apiece.

East Union captain Cherie DeJesus made her presence felt with a towering first-inning home run on her way to a relaxing 2 for 2 performance. The Lancers spread the love around, getting several players action and getting multiple hits from seven different players.

“Our girls that came off the bench really came in and performed,” Lancer head coach Brian Goulart said. “We had Brianna Lamont come in and go 3 for 3 and Bryana Teicheira came off the bench and went 2 for 2.

“We had so many great contributions from our entire team tonight.”

Kourtni McCall handled the Lancers’ pitching, going four innings and retiring 12 batters in a row after giving up a pair of hits to start the game. McCall also helped her cause, collecting two hits in the win. Cassandra Allen went 2 for 3 and Cherrise Martin went 3 for 5. Lamont drove in four with her three hits, and Waggy connected on her first home run of the season.

CERES – Seven errors proved to be costly for the Buffaloes in a one-sided VOL loss to the Bulldogs Friday.

The teams entered the fourth inning deadlocked in a scoreless tie and Ceres broke that with a three-run fourth. The Buffaloes fought back, putting themselves in position to get back in the game after getting two on with nobody out, but failed execution left Manteca gripping with another blown opportunity.

Manteca failed to get down a sacrifice bunt, got a runner picked off and mixed in a strikeout to finish the inning. The Buffaloes were more than capable of playing with Ceres, but they’re going to have to make the routine plays if they expect to win.

“I’m not sure what happened out there because we work on it every day at practice,” Manteca head coach Todd Hardcastle said. “It almost looked like they were just back on their heels.

“We just sat there kind of shaking our heads, at our best players.”

Manteca will continue VOL play April 5 when they travel to Stockton to take on the Weston Ranch Cougars.

SONORA – The Cougars fought off an hour-and-a-half delay, but could not fight off the Wildcats in a 9-1 loss Friday.

Sonora broke things open with a six-run third inning, pushing the game out of reach early.

Alexandra Alvarado led the Cougars, going 2 for 3 with a double, while Miranda Holmes also went 2 for 3 with a pair of singles.

CERES – The Buffaloes battled back from a 2-1 deficit to pull out the victory over the Bulldogs.

Manteca (2-0, 6-2) struck first with a leadoff bunt-single from Brooke Mejorado, followed by a sacrifice bunt from Jessica Munoz and a RBI single from Ashley Stone to take the 1-0 lead.

Munoz handled the pitching, going seven innings, surrendering two runs and three hits and striking out five. Munoz was also 2 for 3 and Samantha Bradford went 1 for 3. The Buffaloes pulled the game out with a run in the sixth after Hailee Teixeira walked, stole second and scored when the throw to second sailed.


The Lancers used a four in the first and nine in the second to push past the Hawks Friday in VOL action.

Jill Costa went 4 for 4, Kailee Nuding went 3 for 3 and both Ashley Cook and Stephanie Bookie went 2 for 3 for the Lancers.

Jenny Ketner, Natalie Large and Costa combined for seven strikeouts and one earned run.
