ROCKLIN – Twenty-eight area wrestlers advanced beyond Day 1 of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV and V Tournaments Friday, either going undefeated and qualifying for today’s championship semifinals or winning two out of three matches and qualifying for the consolation bracket.
Sierra and East Union both qualified four wrestlers for today’s semifinal round, and the T’Wolves qualified every wrestler they sent to Whitney High for Day 2.
The Sierra semifinalists include Robert Howard (119 pounds), Aiden Foster (145), Alex Nuanez (160), and Oscar Castro, while Austin Soto (112), Kameron Milam (125), Ray Widmer (171), Anthony Colonico all went 2-1.
“We wrestled really well today,” Sierra head coach Frank Sabala said. “We’re starting to see all of that hard work paying off. Kameron wrestled his first match against a kid from Center who beat him in the Weston Ranch Tournament, but today (Milam) pinned him.”
For the Lancers, Marco Castaneda (119), Stevyn Teeple (130), Matt Neves (140) and Devon Woodall all went 2-0 and remain in the championship bracket, while Jason Cortez (125), Parsa Davari (135) and Albert Aguilar (215) will wrestle for third place.
“We wrestled well. We had a couple of upsets (against us) and we got at least one upset,” EU head coach A.J. Reindel said. “At this level of competition, anything can happen. We need to remain focused.”
Weston Ranch sent three wrestlers into the semifinals, including Chris Rodriguez (103), Travis Bowen (135) and Chris Contreras (189).
Ripon sent three to the semifinals as well at the Division V Tournament at Lindhurst High: Trevor Daniel (145), Ryan Mackey (171) and Matt Baker.
Manteca failed to qualify any wrestlers for the championship semifinals, but Zach Williams is still alive at heavyweight after going 1-1 Friday.
Williams will fight hard for third place this afternoon.
“We’re looking forward to tomorrow,” Manteca head coach John Vazquez said. “It’s a different level now, but we’re looking forward to Zach finishing third.”
