Four Manteca High tennis players played their final matches of the 2012 season in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II Tournament Thursday at Roseville’s Johnson Ranch Racquet Club.

For Oral Nunis it was his last hurrah.

The senior drew No. 4-seeded Greg Beleon of Vanden in the first round and lost, 1-6, 2-6. Nunis earned the Valley Oak League singles title this season while leading the Buffaloes to the conference team championship as their No. 1 player.

“Singles is always tough for us at this point,” Manteca coach Frank Fontana said. “We lack experience against these guys, but we actually played well today — the (opposing) players were just a little bit better. Oral is going out as the VOL’s singles champion and has nothing to hang his head over.”

The rest of the Buffaloes who made the trip are underclassmen making their first appearance in the section’s individual tournament.

Freshman Michael Lopez, who lost to Nunis in the VOL finals, battled Western Athletic Conference champion Sterling Ramirez of Patterson to a three-set loss, 6-3, 6-7, 3-6.

In doubles, sophomore Jacob Webb and freshman Yok-Jing Ma — who combined to win the VOL tournament — were able to get out of the first round with a 6-0, 6-0 rout of a tandem from Kennedy High. The victory moved then into a second-round showdown with second-seeded Scott Tutty and Chris Serasin of Bella Vista, who prevailed, 6-3, 6-0.

“Three out of our four section qualifiers are underclassmen, so it was good experience to see how much better they are going to have to get to compete at that level,” Fontana said. “They have something to shoot for and have a chance to come back and improve on their effort.”
