CUPERTINO — It was the battle of the bigs when 6-foot center Lauren Feddersen and Ripon’s girls basketball team met Monta Vista of the Central Coast Section for their annual non-league contest Saturday.
Feddersen poured in 23 points to lead the Indians while Monta Vista’s Alexandra Chiu posted 22, but it was Ripon that prevailed 57-52 after being down by as much as nine early in the fourth quarter.
Ripon (10-8) outscored the Matadors (10-7) in the fourth quarter, 23-11.
“That was the most we’ve scored (in one quarter) all year,” Ripon coach George Contente said. “We had some big defensive stops, and a lot of girls contributed in some ways for us down the stretch. It was great to see our kids stepping up like that.”
Rachel Rodriguez gave the Indians a nice complementary presence in the post, finishing with nine while grabbing key rebounds. Kendra Contente pitched in with 13 points.
The game was a good tune-up for Ripon going into Monday’s road game against Modesto Christian. Modesto Christian, the three-time defending Trans Valley League champion, is ranked second among the state’s Division IV teams according to CalHiSports.com.
Both teams head into the contest 2-0 in league.
“That’s a big game for us,” coach Contente said. “We’ll see what we can do.”
