Godfreys 17 leads Buffs past Sonora

Eric Godfrey scored 10 of his game-high 17 in the first quarter as the Manteca sophomore boys basketball team raced out to a 13-5 lead and cruised to a 52-45 win.

Manteca closes the season at East Union Friday.

Central Valley 63, Sierra 62
A couple of questionable calls in the closing moments allowed Central Valley to take the one-point lead and hold on to it.

Bryce Hicks had 17 for the T’Wolves (7-8 Valley Oak League,  10-14), Jerrod Patton had 11 and Grant Widmer had 10.

“This is a tough loss for us,” Sierra head coach Justin Muschott said. “We had opportunities to put them away and instead we let them hang around. People will look to the last few plays and blame the refs for this loss, but no excuses, we had our chances.”

Sierra closes the season when Weston Ranch visits Friday night.

Ceres 52, Weston Ranch 50
A season of tough losses continued for the Cougars Wednesday as Ceres hit the game-winner with 10 seconds left.

Lorenzo Simmons paced Weston Ranch (5-10 VOL) with 20, Jesus Fuentes had 12 and Melvin Allen added nine.

“It was a great game, but a tough way to lose,” Cougars head coach Eddie Menzel said. “We played them tough.”

Weston Ranch travels to Sierra Friday.

Oakdale 55, East Union 39
Down five heading into the fourth, East Union lost its edge.

TeeJay Gordon had 16 for the Lancers (6-9 VOL, 11-14).

East Union hosts Manteca Friday.

Manteca 52, Sonora 44
Ben O’Dell led the way for Manteca with 18 points and was complemented by Stanley Walker’s 10 and Ruben Stewart’s 13.

Manteca (9-6 VOL) travels to East Union Friday afternoon.

Ceres 38, Weston Ranch 37
Nick Welsh’s free throws with three seconds left lifted the Bulldogs over Weston Ranch.

The Cougars let a 10-point second half lead slip away.

Marlon Aumentado had 14 and Aaron Washington added seven.

Weston Ranch (7-7 VOL, 9-8) travels to Sierra Friday.

Sierra 44, Central Valley 37
The Timberwolves won their sixth of eight contests Wednesday behind Jojo Berry’s 10.

Both John Waggy and Bret Wilson had nine.

Sierra (7-8 VOL, 10-14) hosts Weston Ranch Friday.

East Union 46, Oakdale 44
Up 22-12 at half, East Union avoided its first VOL loss by weathering a late Oakdale run.

Alex Del Rio had 20 points and eight rebounds.

Zac Carrillo had eight points and six boards, and Brock Swift dropped seven.

EU (15-0 VOL, 22-2) will try to wrap a perfect VOL season when Manteca visits Dalben Center Friday.
